چکیده

In MAS studies on Trust building and dynamics the role of direct/personal experience and of recommendations and reputation is proportionally overrated; while the importance of inferential processes in deriving the evaluation of trustees’ trustworthiness is underestimated and not exploited. In this paper we focus on the importance of generalized knowledge: agents' categories. The cognitive advantage of generalized knowledge can be synthesized in this claim: "It allows us to know a lot about something/somebody we do not directly know". At a social level this means that I can know a lot of things on people that I never met; it is social "prejudice" with its good side and fundamental contribution to social exchange. In this study we experimentally inquire the role played by categories' reputation with respect to the reputation and opinion on single agents: when it is better to rely on the first ones and when are more reliable the second ones. Our claim is that: the larger the population and the ignorance about the trustworthiness of each individual (as it happens in an open world) the more precious the role of trust in categories. This powerful inferential device has to be strongly present in WEB societies supported by MAS.

Computational fluid dynamic study of upper airway flow to predict the success of oral appliances in treating sleep apnea

In this study we used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to analyse the therapeutic effect of an oral device (mandibular advancement splint – MAS) that protrudes the lower jaw during sleep on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Clinical data of 4 patients were used for CFD analysis, with patient selection being on the basis of their known different treatment responses. Anatomically accurate upper ai...

Reducing Retrieval Time in Automated Storage and Retrieval System with a Gravitational Conveyor Based on Multi-Agent Systems

The main objective of this study is to reduce the retrieval time of a list of products by choosing the best combination of storage and retrieval rules at any time. This is why we start by implementing some storage rules in an Automated Storage/Retrieval System (Automated Storage and Retrieval System: AS/RS) fitted with a gravity conveyor while some of these rules are dedicated to storage and ot...

Architectural Properties of Multi-Agent Systems

One aspect of multi-agent systems (MAS) that has been only partially studied is their role in software engineering, and in particular their merit as a software architecture style. As we demonstrate, multi-agent systems developed to date have several common architectural characteristics, even though differences in their design and implementation result in variations in their strengths and weakne...
